Usually when a leaking roof is noticed, evidence is seen on the interior of the house in the form of water stains on drywall.

In order to locate the area on the roof that is malfunctioning, the damaged interior is the starting point of the search.

To investigate further, climbing into the attic is the ideal first step. Once in the attic we look for water marks on the rafters and the roof decking.

At this point it is important to consider what type of roof penetrations are above the evidence in the attic.
Generally there is a sky light, chimney, vent, or blown off shingles above the leak. Another possibility that is quite common is a valley leak.

It is important to understand that water can travel in any direction in the right environment. This means that the damage on your kitchen ceiling could be from a leak above your bathroom or any other part of your roof.

Once the leak has been identified then it is time to repair the leak. Some roofers will find the leak and load it with tar. This decreases the life of your shingles and ultimately will start leaking with in a few years again.

​Tar is broken down by the sun and causes shingles to deteriorate at an increased pace.
To properly fix a leak, you must replace the damaged shingles, flashing, vent, or valley. It is possible that some plywood will also need to be replaced.

In some cases where the chimney is leaking, it is due to the state of the brick on the chimney. In this situation one of the cheapest and simplest ways to correct the issue is to build a metal chimney sleeve and install it over the chimney.

Some home owners prefer to have the brick removed and a modern chimney stack installed, regardless of the price increase. This method is safer and more cosmetically appealing.
